WebMCP is a new technology that lets your engineering team teach AI agents how to use your website.
Right now, if an AI like Claude tries to complete a task on a website (signing up for a product, filling out a form, configuring a setting), it has to figure out the page the same way a confused first-time visitor would: reading labels, guessing at buttons, hoping nothing changes mid-task. It works sometimes. It fails a lot.
WebMCP gives your team a way to skip that guesswork.
Instead of making the AI read the page and hope for the best, your developers define a list of named actions the site can perform. E.g., "create a new project," "apply a template," or "start a free trial," each described in plain language so an AI can understand exactly what it does and when to use it.
When a user brings an AI (e.g., Claude for Chrome or another AI browser extension) into their browser to accomplish a task, the AI reads those descriptions and calls the right one directly. The AI can only do what your team has explicitly defined, and certain actions require the user to confirm before anything happens.
A user asks Claude to sign up for a project management tool, pre-fill their company information, and start a free trial.
Without WebMCP, the agent tries to figure this out by reading the page and simulating clicks, and fails the moment a button label changes or a popup window appears.
With WebMCP, the site has already registered tools (e.g., create_account and start_trial), each with a clear description of what it does and what it needs. The agent reads those, calls the right ones in sequence, and finishes the task. The user doesn't see any of the mechanics. It just works.
WebMCP was co-authored by engineers at Microsoft and Google, and published as a W3C Community Group Draft Specification in February 2026. It builds on Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard already used by Claude, Cursor, and a growing list of developer tools to connect AI models to external data sources. As of early 2026, it's available in an early developer build of Chrome, not yet on by default, with Microsoft Edge expected to follow.
How WebMCP differs from standard MCP: it runs in the browser
Before WebMCP, connecting an AI agent to a website's functionality meant building a whole separate piece of infrastructure: a dedicated server your engineering team had to write, maintain, and keep in sync with the rest of the product.
WebMCP removes that barrier. Your team adds “tool definitions” directly to the code that already runs the webpage.
Because WebMCP works in the browser, it has direct access to everything you know about the user (their account, their current view, their session).
The specification also accounts for the different types of agents that might interact with your site: agents built natively into the browser (think a future where Chrome ships with a first-party AI assistant), agents delivered through browser extensions, and agents from external platforms like Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini working through a browser context.

Eventually, the user may ask the agent to find the best tool, evaluate the top options against their requirements, sign up for the one that fits, and get it configured. The agent handles the whole workflow. The user approves key decisions but doesn't navigate the web themselves.
Two things have to go right for your product to make it through that process.
The first is being found. Visibility in AI tools (through training data, live web search, or citation in AI answers) determines whether you show up at all.
It's why SEO and GEO strategy matters more now, not less, even as traditional search traffic gets messier to measure.
The second is being usable. If an agent brings a user to your site and the signup flow fails because the agent can't reliably navigate it, you've lost a conversion that was essentially handed to you.
What WebMCP means for your content strategy and content system

Does WebMCP replace existing SEO and GEO work?
No. The case for visibility work gets stronger, not weaker.
WebMCP only helps agents that have already found your site. Whether your product shows up when an agent is building a shortlist is still determined by your presence in search indexes, AI training data, and AI answer citations.
Do we need to implement WebMCP to stay relevant to AI agents?
Not immediately. Most agents visiting websites today are reading content, not calling registered tools. WebMCP is an enhancement, not a prerequisite.
That said, if browser-based agents become mainstream, sites that offer reliable tool-based interaction will likely have a real conversion advantage over ones that don't.
Who writes the tool descriptions in a WebMCP implementation?
Developers define the technical structure, but the plain-language descriptions are a content responsibility. If your current process doesn't include content review of developer-written copy, this is a reasonable place to start.
